About Freeplay
There are two ways to play DungeonWorld; Freeplay, or Commercial Play. Most people who try the game for the first time may like to try the freeplay option first to see if they enjoy the system. (We are sure they will.) Whichever way you choose you will still be playing in the same consistent world as everybody else, using the same rules.
FreePlay
Unlike some other online or turn-based games there are no limitations to your in-game experience with our Freeplay option. You use the same rules, play in the same world, can do the same quests, find the same items and gain the same skills.
Nor is there any limit to the length of time you can enjoy a Freeplay position in DungeonWorld. You can play for months, years, decades even! Your character can grow from a novice into a seasoned champion, become a noble, lead a guild, become a champion in every sense.
The only limitation with Freeplay is that you can only play a single adventurer character and you cannot have any chargeable sub-characters (things like Guard Dogs, or Men-At-Arms) which would normally cost a nomimal fee to control. For the most part this will not affect you at all. You can still control sub-characters which are usually "free" in the game like magically summoned monsters.
If you want to play multiple characters, or if you wish to try a special position like an Estate Position, or a Monster Position, you would need to move to commercial play. You cannot be both a Freeplay and a Commercial Player. However, if you choose to open a Commercial Position later, you can include your freeplay character in it, so it will not be lost. Freeplay, as you would imagine by its name, costs absolutely nothing.
We do hope, obviously, that you enjoy the game to play a larger position and go "commercial" but you will never be asked or pressured to do so. If you want to keep playing for free, that's entirely up to you. While we are a commercial company and do make a living from running our games, the input and interaction that freeplay players provide is valued and welcome in the game!
PLEASE NOTE: Obviously it is technically possible for a person to try and get past the single-character limitation in Freeplay by opening multiple positions under different names. We take this sort of dishonesty very seriously. Should we think this is the case, your positions would be closed, you would be permanently banned from the game and we reserve the right to take legal action against you to recover the funds you should have paid. We don't want to do this of course so please, be honest, play fair and everybody will have fun!
The Small Print
Participation in a Freeplay position is subject to your understanding and agreement to our House Rules, available for viewing on this website. Madhouse reserve the right to close any Freeplay account or position at any time without notice should we deem it necessary (though we obviously hope this will never be necessary.)
