About Characters
Character-Based Game
Destiny is a character-based game. Everything boils down to your core characters.
In general, when we talk about characters we mean the individual people who move around the game maps under your
control. However, spacecraft are also characters (just a different type).
In a commercial position, you can control as many, or as few, characters as you wish in Destiny. The game can
be played with as little as a single character, or with hundreds of characters. Since Destiny can be played as a
cooperative game, its possible for multiple different players to team up and work together to achieve their goals.
When playing a Freeplay position you cannot control more than one character at any time. This means, to really enjoy the game
you will usually have to work together with other players to achieve your goals.
Character Classes
Perhaps you are familiar with the term Character Classes from other games. It means an archetype from which your character
is built which will have a bearing on their statistics, skills they can learn and avenues of game-play they can pursue. When you choose
a character class for your character you are making a decision which will guide the rest of their exploring career, to one extent or another.
However, most skills in Destiny can be learnt by anyone, they are just easier to learn if they are a skill applicable to your character class.
It’s true, any Tom, Dick or Harry can go into space. With humanity again reaching for the stars its not terribly difficult to book passage
on a freight vessel, join an exploration team or travel with a new colony. However, the law is quite strict. No person under the age of 16
is allowed to travel aimlessly into space.
Consequently, all your characters begin at least at age 16. You can choose to have them begin older, which gives you more experience
points to spend on skills and suchlike, but check the consequences of age before you make a hasty decision there. Deciding what age your
character begins at is very important. Your character can begin at any age from 16 to 60.
Character Aging
This probably seems easy, right? Choose ‘50’, start the game with loads of skills! Of course, there’s rather more involved. You gain 1 year
of age for every 10 game turns; and in space age can be a killer! At various ages, your stats will be affected and you will get slower and weaker,
your body will not heal as quickly from injury and will not be as resistant to radiation and sickness. This begins, albeit at a lower level, at age 30.
Bearing all this in mind, when starting a new character you must consider whether you want to be younger and fitter, with fewer skills, or older and wiser,
with the affects of aging tapping more loudly at your door.
How It Works
A sixteen-year old begins the game with 3 skill points, enough to buy three basic skills or one intermediate skill. Each year older than that you
choose to start gains you another skill point. Almost everything you can do in the game requires skills of some kind so this is very useful. But every
year older than 29 you are increases the detriments you suffer due to age, some of which can be very serious.
About Freeplay
You can have a lot of fun playing Destiny for free, but non-commercial players do suffer a few restrictions. First of all, they don’t get access to the
full range of character classes (some classes are reserved for commercial play only.) Secondly, their characters cannot start the game any older
than 20 years of (in-game) age. Nothing prevents them from growing older in-game and learning more skills as they play, though.
Character Classes
There are four character classes both of which are available both as male or female.
The four classes are; Citizen, Scientist, Military and East-Sider.
Citizens are the normal folk who populate the urban areas of Earth.
While they are the most non-specialised class they do have a certain
adaptability and have access to useful skills. In classic Sci-Fi, for instance,
Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon would both have been made
from the Citizen class.
Scientists are the very intelligent students of one of the
many available fields of scientist in the game.
Pick any science character
from any sci-fi show or novel and you're on the right track
for these guys. They make everything work, and keep it all working!
Military characters are anybody that has served in any arm of
the forces, or even worked in some non-government force
like mercenary, bodyguard or shao-lin monk!
East-Siders, named after the notorious East Side of Earth City
are those who walk on the darker side of life. The gamblers, streetwalkers,
hustlers, con-men, thieves and rogues of the universe.
