ABOUT TURN-BASED GAMES
Turn-Based Games, also known as PBM and PBEM (abbreviations for the terms Play-By-Mail
and Play-By-Email) are games which can be played in 'turns' with multiple
players. PBM is the term used when the game is played
by normal post (snail mail). PBEM is the term used when
the game is played by email through the internet. Turn-Based Gaming is the blanket term for all games played in stages, or 'turns' over a long period.
Is This Like A Live-Action Online Game?
Absolutely not. Live Action Online Games are played
'live'. You move around and do things while sitting
at your computer and instructing your characters by
pressing keys and clicking the mouse. PBEM games are
not 'live'. You submit orders by email which our computer
receives. Periodically the computer will 'run' the turn,
processing all orders from all players it has received.
It will then produce a printed report in the form of
a PDF file, which will be emailed to you. At your leisure
you can examine the report and decide what to do next.
When you are ready, you submit some more orders and
the cycle begins again. It's not as 'immediate' as live
online games, but in some ways this is its strength.
You choose when you want to look at the report and work
on your turn. You choose how often you participate.
Some people put turns in every day, while others put
them in only once a fortnight! You can even print out
your PDF and take it to work with you, or on the bus,
or to school, or wherever you may want to go!
